History

Sceletium Tortuosum is a succulent plant in the family Aizoaceae commonly found in parts of Southern Africa. Sceletium is known to elevate mood and decrease anxiety, stress and tension. Historically, it has been used by the San as a mood enhancer, sedative, analgesic for toothache and stomach pains, and appetite/thirst suppressant when walking long distances in arid areas.

Mechanism

The key phytochemical active constituent in Sceletium Tortuosum is Mesembrine, which has been shown to be a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI). Mesembrine allows the brain to function with reduced levels of serotonin, allowing time for natural levels to build up. Other alkaloids contained in Sceletium, which have similar but reduced effect, are mesembrenone, mesembrenol and tortuosamine.

Toxicity & Interactions

Sceletium has no known toxicity and no severe adverse effects have ever been documented from centuries of use. It should not be combined with SSRIs, Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs), cardiac or psychiatric medications.
